About John H. Tidyman

John Tidyman was ordered by his father to take a touch typing class the summer before high school. Tidyman often cites that incident as the reason he became a writer. After graduating from Lakewood High School, he was drafted and fought in the Vietnam War. He returned a 19-year old buck sergeant. His best war story concerns coming home. At the Seattle-Tacoma Airport, dressed in Class A uniform, he was denied a drink. Too young.

Before he joined the Cleveland Press as a reporter, Tidyman worked as a waiter, a warehouseman, and an air freight agent. He is the author of eight books and has also written for almost every area publication in town. The recipient of many journalism awards, his byline showed up in Free Times, Northern Ohio Live, The Plain Dealer, Ohio magazine, Cleveland magazine, Crain’s Cleveland Business, Sunday Magazine, et al. Most, he notes, are now resting on the bottom of Lake Erie, providing cover for perch.

He is host on the award-winning radio program, “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again,” broadcast on WNCX 98.5 Classic Rock at 7 on Sunday mornings. Podcast on www.dd214chronicle.com, and editor of DD 214 Chronicle, a bimonthly newspaper for veterans (and all who love them) in five northeast Ohio counties: Medina, Lake, Lorain, Summit, and Cuyahoga.

john, you are just delightful. Hope you can come to next years golf outing. Next time we will give you more warning about time and place. A good time was had by all. I love your writing.

  3. Hi John. Would you happen to be a descendant of Sgt. John A. Tidyman? The reason I ask is because I ran across a letter at a Goodwill store in California from 1935 from Mary Jones to Sgt. John A. Tidyman who was a marine stationed in California. Let me know if this is a relative and I will send the letter to you.

Thanks – E.J. Stephens, Canyon County, California

Cleveland golfer’s bible – 6th edition long overdue!

You’re right. Lots of change in northeast Ohio golf. New courses opened, old ones closed. Great change in private clubs. Here’s why I don’t think I’ll be writing No. 6: 1.) To do it write, I’d like to begin at the beginning, do the complete over, from scratch; 2) It’s a two-season project; 3.) Sales of recent editions don’t justify the time and effort for a new one; 4.) You’re the first person to ask for another edition.

On the bright side, last season I wrote “Golf, Poker & Whiskey: The Guys’ Guide to Ohio Golf Getaways” for Orange Frazer Press, 238 pp., $14.95. It is available at all major bookstores. Or from me, if you drop by.

Equally interesting, I write and edit for a new, veterans newspaper, DD 214 Chronicle, which serve veterans and all who love them, in a five county northeast Ohio area: Summit, Medina, Lake, Lorain, and Cuyahoga. Web site is dd214chronicle.com. It is published bimonthly and available at libraries, VFW and Legion posts, Harley dealerships, a few gun shops, city halls, the odd tattoo parlor, VA and other health facilities, and colleges with veteran programs.

Launched late last year, the reception has been gratifying. I’m about to tell our golf writer, Tony Ganda PGA, that for the July/August issue, I’m going to replace him with excerpt from “Golf, Poker & Whiskey.”

Thank you for asking, though I suggest your motive was self-serving: You wanted to tell you Mom you had a pen pal relationship with the author of the Bible.

Truly actually very good web site article which has got me considering. I never looked at this from your point of view.

  7. Many years ago I worked briefly at the Plain Dealer and there was a young Tidyman there, whose father also worked there. That was in 1965-66. Your picture does not look like him but I wondered if you are related? If you were in Viet Nam you could not be his son. I don’t remember if his first name was John, but that was long ago and who could forget the surname Tidyman? He was beefier than you, blond hair. Smart and likable guy.
